Lizards are part of a group of animals known as reptiles. They are most closely related to snakes. In fact, some lizards, called sheltopusiks, look like snakes because they have no legs! In general, lizards have a small head, short neck, and long body and tail.
four legs
They become, for the moment, bipedal. More than 50 lizard species can run on two legs. Perhaps the most famous is the basilisk lizard, whose two-legged scamper can propel it across water — earning it the nickname “the Jesus Christ lizard.” But bipedal lizards may be much more ancient than biblical times.
In California, two different legless lizards exist within the genus Anniella; the California legless lizard and the Baja California legless lizard. The California legless lizard is also known as the silvery legless lizard and the black legless lizard.

“It is believed that skinks are losing their limbs because they spend most of their lives swimming through sand or soil; limbs are not only unnecessary for this, but may actually be a hindrance,” said Skinner, who headed up the study. …
The researchers discovered that skinks with no legs were better able to move around in dry conditions—without legs, they were better at burrowing, for example. On the other hand, skinks with legs (and feet) were better able to move around under wetter conditions. Their legs allowed them to navigate over wet soil.
Lizards are the closest relative to mammals that can regenerate an appendage, and they have a similar genome and biochemistry. But lizards cannot regenerate lost limbs at all, and their regenerated tails are much simpler than the originals. “You can easily tell a lizard with a regenerated tail,” Lozito said.
And it’s a lot easier to sort of swim through the dirt than it is to dig through it,” says Connor. “So for legless lizards, being able to burrow underground faster is a desirable trait.” This means that a long, long time ago, a lizard was hatched that had shorter than usual legs.
Burton’s legless lizards are intelligent and easy to care for, with the exception of being lizard eaters. All in all, if you don’t mind feeding reptiles to your pet reptile, they make excellent pets.
Abundance: The mimic glass lizard is a recently described species and it is uncertain how widespread or common it is. At present it is thought to be uncommon or rare in most areas. Notes: Glass lizards earned their name by their propensity to “shatter” by breaking their tail, often in several pieces.
Legless lizards can survive 20 years in the wild and up to 38 years in captivity.
Lizard refers to a reptile that typically has a long body and tail, four legs, movable eyelids, and a rough, scaly, or spiny skin, while snake refers to a long limbless reptile which has a short tail, and jaws that are capable of considerable extension. Thus, this is the fundamental difference between lizard and snake.
Not all lizards have split or forked tongues — in fact, the only ones that do are monitors. Monitors use their tongues in ways drastically different from how we use our tongues.
