To make tan frosting or food coloring with paste food coloring, combine 5 parts yellow and 3 parts brown. If you’re using gel colors, start with a tiny bit of brown. Added to buttercream frosting, the brown will appear tan.
Mix one part each of red, blue and yellow color with a toothpick and mix well. Add a half-part of black to darken the hue if required. Add a minute amount of that mixture into your white frosting, and continue to add brown color until the correct hue of beige is achieved.
Mix red and yellow in a 1:10 ratio (1 drop red to 10 drops yellow) for tan. Add 1 drop blue for a darker brown. Add red or yellow if the dye looks gray or black. Add orange and green to lighten a red and green mix and make tan.
What two colors make tan you ask? You can create tan by mixing brown and white together. Blue is the only primary color within the cool spectrum. Greens take on some of the attributes of yellow, and purple takes on some of the attributes of red. They are often more subdued than warm colors. Cool colors appear farther from the observer.

All of the blue squares are considered cool, but when comparing blue to blue-green, the blue-green is moving towards yellow and thus is warmer than true blue. In the case of yellow, a shade that had more green is cooler than one that has more orange.
Absolutely warm and cool colors can be found at 0 (red – no warmer color) and 180 (cyan – no cooler color) degrees. While one color can be seen as warmer or cooler than another color, each color also has warm and cool components; there are warm yellows and cool yellows, warm blues and cool blues, etc.
