An opinion piece is an article, usually published in a newspaper or magazine, that mainly reflects the author’s opinion about a subject.
Opinion writing is “. . . an elementary type of argument in which students give reasons for their opinions and preferences. Because reasons are required, such writing helps prepare students for drafting the arguments they will be expected to create beginning in grade 6” (p. 2, CCSS-ELA Appendix C).
A counterclaim is a claim used to rebut a previous claim. A claim is the main argument. A counterclaim is the opposite of the claim, or argument.
Supporting evidence proves a claim to be true. Supporting evidence can be a summary, paraphrased or a direct quote. Supporting evidence is a crucial part in body paragraphs and it is important to be discerning in the evidence chosen. supporting evidence proving claims.
Begin each supporting paragraph with a topic sentence. This statement reinforces your point for the reader. Everything in the paragraph should support the point you establish in the initial sentence. Use specific facts from your research and specific examples to enhance and clarify the point you are making.
The supporting sentences, also called the body of the paragraph, are used to support, explain, illustrate, or provide evidence for the idea expressed in the topic sentence. Major supporting details provide the basic, necessary information for the reader to understand the topic of the paragraph or text. These can be viewed as the essential outline of the topic that the reader can focus on to fully understand the main idea if he does not want to delve deeper into the specific details.
