Cost of painting a fence The fence painting cost for your home will be split into two figures – the cost of the materials and the cost of labour. The average cost of paint/wood stain is £20.75. The average cost of labour is £162.50 with a timescale of 0.5 – 2 days.
Paint sits on the surface and therefore covers the wood whereas stain soaks into the wood and colours. Paint is great for completely transforming fencing. A fence can turn from beige to blue in the blink of an eye. Stain can do the same but that grain can be seen most of the time and the impact is less dramatic.
Wait until the fence is dry, this could take a few days depending on the season or climate. Paint and damp wood don’t mix. Clean the fence before you paint, rainwater leaves dirt and particles on the fence and hard rain could splatter mud onto it.
Stain is more forgiving than paint – it may not require primer, and you don’t have to work so hard to get a uniform color. If you have a textured or rough-hewn fence style, stain will work much better than paint. It enhances raw wood’s natural beauty and texture. Unlike paint, stain won’t peel, crack or blister.
Make sure all your paints are specially designed for exterior wood, this will mean it is tough, durable and can usually be wiped clean. We recommend using a primer before you paint, this will increase the lifespan of your wood meaning you won’t have to repaint them.
Do I need to pressure wash fence before painting? Yes. Pressure washing fences before painting is recommended because it will remove dirt so it is not “painted” onto the fence.
Pressure wash your fence annually to keep it looking like new. You shouldn’t have to apply fresh paint or sealant every year, but you should reapply it every few years or so to keep it protected. By Jim O.
Does Paint Cover Algae Properly? Paint can cover the visible signs of algae on a surface, but doesn’t kill the live spores. Painting over the top of algae on wooden surfaces such as fences and decking is not effective at permanently solving the problem, and you can expect algae to reappear within a few months.
For a small fence, up to 175 square feet, you will only need one gallon of stain, in any transparency. If your fence is larger, up to 550 square feet, you will need to buy 2 gallons of stain. For very large fences, up to 700 square feet, you will need 3 to 4 gallons of stain to complete the project.
Divide the total square feet of fence to be stained by the coverage listed on the can. For example, if you have 1,000 square feet of fence and the stain says that 1 gallon covers 200 square feet, you would divide 1,000 by 200, which equals 5 gallons to cover the fence.
Is It Cheaper to Paint or Stain a Fence? Paint is less expensive, but you’ll need more of it and you’ll also need primer. Stain is more expensive, but you won’t need as much of it and it can last longer than paint. In the end, both products cost about the same when you consider how much you need and how long they last.

Gray. Gray is a classic neutral that goes well with every style of home. It’s a versatile color that pairs well with everything from edgy modern style fences to classic picket fences. The cool thing about gray, is that you can choose either a gray paint, or a gray stain.
A wood fence provides privacy, security and a great focal point for your property. Routine wood fence maintenance is important to maintain the aesthetic of the fence and the life of the wood. A fence should be stained every two to three years to preserve the look and function of the fence.

In buying wood for fences, people should get pressure-treated wood for posts, says Ethan Elaison, co-owner of Elaison Lumber in Fresno. Posts should be pressure-treated because they go into the ground, where they are susceptible to insects and moisture.

Your neighbour doesn’t have to change a wall or fence just because you want them to, for example making it higher for privacy. You can’t make changes to your side without their permission, such as painting it. If the wall or fence seems dangerous, point this out because your neighbour might not be aware.
Painting or staining a wood fence can help your fence last longer and look better. Either one will extend the lifespan of your fence by giving it some protection against rot, insects, wear, and tear. Paint doesn’t allow the cedar to breathe, which means you’ll actually reduce the lifespan of the fence.
Though yard fencing can be expensive, we’ve rounded up some cheap fence ideas to fit nearly any budget.
Treated pine tends to be the most affordable, and also durable wood option. Cedar tends to be a pricier wood for fencing, and redwood and teak at the top end. Vinyl, wrought iron, brick or stone fences are the most expensive.
For example, a fence in the front yard may reduce the curb appeal of your home but a fence in the backyard can increase the value of the property. Wooden fences or other solid fences like concrete or cast iron could potentially net at least 50 percent of the cost of materials and installation on resale.
2 Answers. A general rule (not sure if your neighbors abide to it) is to build the fence 1-2 feet inside your property line. You mention that the fence post is presumably in their property so even butting up to it would be in their yard.
Check Rules and Regulations Typically, fences are installed anywhere from 2 to 8 inches from a property line in most areas. Some areas might allow to go right up to a property line, especially if you live in an urban row house where every inch makes a difference!
