While some scouts think that being short is an obstacle to playing at the NHL level, there are plenty of players throughout NHL history that have proven those skeptics wrong. To qualify, a player has to be less than 5’10”. They also had to be at least below-average in height during the time they were playing.
size doesn’t matter. The Tampa Bay Lightning, the NHL’s top team, is also the smallest, using height or weight as the criteria (study the graph on this page). Some teams at or near the top of their division are “big.” Others are small. In other words, size is irrelevant.
While officials tolerate fighting during hockey games, they impose a variety of penalties on players who engage in fights.
So the million dollar question is, what’s the ideal body fat percentage for hockey players? Answer: No higher than 12% for males, and 18% for females. Ideally for males, you should be anywhere from 8-10% body fat. Up to 12% is acceptable though – Any higher than this is likely a performance trade-off.
