According to this NPR account, “[Hendrix] explained later that the idea for the words to ‘Purple Haze’ came to him in a dream after he had read a science fiction novel.” A sci-fi fan, Hendrix was reading Night of Light, a 1966 novel by Philip Jose Farmer, according to his biographer Charles Cross in Rolling Stone.

The 7#9 chord is an extended dominant 7th chord with an augmented (sharpened) ninth. This chord form got its nickname because it was a favorite of Hendrix, who did a great deal to popularize its use in mainstream rock music. Later, Hendrix also used the chord on live versions of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”.

Hendrix opened his set with a version of the title track from The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, which had been released just three days before.
