December 23, 2015 This article is more than 2 years old. Christopher Columbus and his men brought a lot of things back to Europe after his voyage to the New World: corn, potatoes, and—according to general scholarly consensus—syphilis.
Christopher Columbus gained power for Spain by “discovering” the New World and claiming it for Spain. Because of his actions, Spain was able to claim, and then to conquer, a great deal of territory in what is now Mexico and Central and South America. Spain profited greatly from its colonies in the Americas.
Columbus promised his benefactors, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, to bring back gold, spices, and silks from the Far East, to spread Christianity, and to lead an expedition to China.
He established a small colony there with 39 of his men. The explorer returned to Spain with gold, spices, and “Indian” captives in March 1493, and was received with the highest honors by the Spanish court.
The main communities can be found in the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. The United Kingdom has the largest Chinese population in the region.
