Religion in Punjab Sikhism is the most practiced faith in Punjab, practiced by 16 million people representing 57.69% of the population of Punjab population. Around 38.49% of the population i.e. 10.67 million practice Hinduism, while Islam is followed by 5.35 lakhs comprising 1.93% of the state population.
Punjab in the 19th century. a dominant caste provided it has high status combined with domination. However, in the case of non-Hindus what is called a dominant caste may, in fact, be an upper caste.
Verma (वर्मा) Varma (वर्मा) is surname of Jats, though other communities also use this surname. The title was used historically by Kshatriyas.
According to Ayodhya Prasad Sah, the title was also used by some Brahmins in parts of Odisha, although it is recommended historically for the Kshatriyas.
Jat Sikhs are the most economically powerful, politically/socially influential and occupationally privileged group within Punjab. They are the ‘dominant caste’ (Jodhka 2002; Puri 2003) , owning over 80 per cent of available agricultural land (Jodhka 2004(Jodhka , 2009Ram 2012).
Brahmins usually allow their children marry intercaste only if the partner is Baniya, Rajput or any Punjabi. Beyond that, it is very rare. Brahmins regard Jats as ‘shudra’, so the parents won’t let their daughter marry you.
