Sama (Turkish: Sema, Persian, Urdu and Arabic: سَمَاع – samā’un) is a Sufi ceremony performed as dhikr. Sama means “listening”, while dhikr means “remembrance”. These performances often include singing, playing instruments, dancing, recitation of poetry and prayers, wearing symbolic attire, and other rituals.
The Sema is a 700-year-old ritual or a rite of communal recitation which combines the poetry of Rumi, Turkish classical music, chanting from the Koran and the whirling of the dervishes. It was traditionally performed in the semahane. This was the name given to the place where it was held.
The whirling dervishes are part of the Mevlevi Order, a sect of Sufism born in the 13th century, also known as the Mevlevis. The dervishes revere the Islamic scholar, mystic and renowned Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi (or Mevlâna – ‘our leader’), who greatly influenced Muslim writing and culture.
The Mevlevis are also known as the “whirling dervishes” due to their famous practice of whirling as a form of dhikr (remembrance of God). Dervish is a common term for an initiate of the Sufi path; whirling is part of the formal sema ceremony and the participants are properly known as semazens.
So why were they banned? In the 1920s the Dervishes were banned from Turkey out of fear that their religious roots would lead them to revolt against the new secular government.
Well then, how do the dervishes manage to keep balance and not get dizzy? First, they slowly increase the number of turns tricking the brain to become less and less sensitive to the impulses it receives.
