A good bookmark will hold your place more clearly and reliably than a grubby bit of scrap paper, and it will ensure the structural integrity of each page in the book is preserved. Once you’ve tried a good bookmark, you’ll never want to go back to the dark days of guessing whether you were at page 67 or page 76.

To make them stiffer, use a commercial fabric stiffener. Trim the ornament so that there is no excess fabric. Put down a layer of waxed paper, which will be easy to peel off when the stiffener dries. Always read the instructions for the product you are using.
The stiffness of the fabric is usually due to the starch used by fabric makers. Too much starch could be a sign of cheap, bad quality fabric.
Use your square to ensure that you are pinning it straight. Hold it over the steam again when it is straight on your board, then leave for a few days. The purpose of the steam is to soften the canvas and melt the dressing on the canvas slightly (over wetting will flush it out).
This is very simple; you just tape around the aida / evenweave folding the tape over the edge. When you have finished, cut the edges with the masking tape off instead of just peeling the tape away. This will stop any stick residue being left behind .
Overcast stitch, sometimes called whipstitch, is a hand sewing stitch that wraps the working thread around the edge of fabric or seams. With each, the stitches effectively bind the fabric edge and prevent fraying. Like the machine version, you can also use this stitch for sewing a seam.
When you stitch, the natural oils on your hands transfer to the fabric. That’s why it is important to wash your cross stitch and hand embroidery projects before framing, even if the piece looks clean. Washing is also an easy way to get out stubborn creases and hoop marks made during stitching.

There are two main ways you can do cross stitch pattern design – by hand and using software. Designing by hand is quite simple – you can draw your image onto a sheet of graph paper with a pencil (or trace it or use transfer paper). To get a detailed pattern drafted up will take more time than using software.
Creating cross stitch patterns from your own pictures is very easy with Pic2Pat. In three simple steps you will transform a picture into a beautiful cross stitch chart. The chart can be downloaded to your computer where you can print and store it.
Tips on Finding Free Patterns
Cross stitch is a form of counted thread embroidery that has been around for ages, and it is one of the easiest forms of hand embroidery to learn. Cross stitch projects are often sold as kits, but you can also purchase fabric, thread and basic supplies to come up with your own project.
If you offer custom cross stitch in addition to patterns, you could make even more. If you sell 10 custom cat cross stitch pieces for $100 each, that’s another $1,000 in monthly revenue just for doing something you love.
DMC – one of the most popular brands of thread (or floss) used for embroidery and cross stitch. This is the brand of thread we use in all Caterpillar Cross Stitch kits!
Floss has 6 strands, but usually you will use only 2 strands at a time for stitching and 1 strand for backstitching. On Hardanger fabric (22 count) you usually will use only 1 strand; on 11 count Aida use 3 strands to stitch and 2 to backstitch.
