The use or possession of alcoholic beverages on federal park lands within Fire Island National Seashore is allowed for anyone age 21 or older, except in historic structures and visitor centers.

You can drive to the Fire Island Lighthouse (see parking arrangements below) or to the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness on either end of Fire Island National Seashore, but you can’t drive the length of the island.

There are no paved public roads within Fire Island National Seashore. Upon arrival, you may explore the park on foot or transfer to other park sites via water taxis. Fire Island Water Taxi is authorized to provide lateral ferry service between the Fire Island communities and other destination points on Fire Island.

Do yourself a favor and pack these things: Sunscreen, bug spray, bottled water, and go the extra step and wear your bathing suit under your clothes (or just in general, no one judges you in Fire Island or on the ferry… we’re all too sun-tired).
Fire Island Ferries, Sayville Ferry Service, and Davis Park Ferry are located on Long Island and service Fire Island communities and Sailors Haven and Watch Hill.
The Island is about a 50-60 mile drive from Manhattan depending on which ferry you need to take. The trip can take about 1.5 to 3 hours from Manhattan. Traffic can be heavy in summer, so allow more time to catch the ferry. The train to Fire Island takes about 1.5 hours and runs frequently.
