The biggest reasons the U.S. hasn’t adopted the metric system are simply time and money. When the Industrial Revolution began in the country, expensive manufacturing plants became a main source of American jobs and consumer products.

The Egyptian cubit, the Indus Valley units of length referred to above and the Mesopotamian cubit were used in the 3rd millennium BC and are the earliest known units used by ancient peoples to measure length.

The International System of Units (SI), the most widely used system of measurement today, was developed in an effort to provide a standardized, more rational system that could be used worldwide.

Systems of Measurement: there are two main systems of measurement in the world: the Metric (or decimal) system and the US standard system. In each system, there are different units for measuring things like volume and mass.

Standard units of measurement are units of measurement that are typically used within each measurement system, such as inches, feet, ounces, pounds, kilograms, or cups. Nonstandard units of measurement are units of measurement that aren’t typically used, such as a pencil, an arm, a toothpick, or a shoe.

Characteristics of standard units.

The SI unit of time is second. There are seven base units is SI. They are meter (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), Ampere (current), Kelvin (temperature), candela (luminous intensity), mole (amount of substance). For example, Force – The SI unit is Newton, Pressure – SI unit is Pascal etc.

In writing, the names of SI units are always written in lowercase. However, the symbols of units named after a person are capitalized (e.g., ampere and A). These symbols are not abbreviations, so periods are not required.

Density is commonly expressed in units of grams per cubic centimetre. For example, the density of water is 1 gram per cubic centimetre, and Earth’s density is 5.51 grams per cubic centimetre. Density can also be expressed as kilograms per cubic metre (in metre-kilogram-second or SI units).
